Girls pole vault, boys high jump state champs crowned

Kaiser’s Sage Hintnaus won the girls pole vault and King Kekaulike’s Jay-Ar Agapay won the boys high jump on the first day of the Island Movers/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Track & Field Championships at Kea‘au High School on the Big Island.
Hintnaus cleared 10 feet, 6 inches to edge Sheyenne Machida of Maui, who also cleared 10-6, but needed more attempts.
Agapay cleared 6-6 to beat Mililani’s Andrew Longboy, who cleared 6-4.
Those were the only final events held on the first day of the meet. Trials were held for the remaining events with top qualifiers advancing to today’s finals.
Field events will start at 3:30 p.m. and running events follow at 5:40.
Punahou won the last two boys team titles while Kamehameha won the girls title last year.
Punahou’s Ashley Satterwhite was the top finisher in the girls 100 and 200-meter dashes in times of 12.59 seconds and 26.10.
Ka‘ü’s Jacob Edwards was the top qualifier in the boys 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles in times of 15.29 and 39.77.
Leilehua’s Bryce Jenkins was the top qualifier in the boys 1,500 (4:16.32) and 3,000 (8:57.04).
McKinley’s Solomon Dixon was first in the 200 (22.56) and 400 (50.77).
Punahou had the top boys and girls 4x400 relay teams.
Radford was first in the girls 4x100 and Campbell was first in the boys 4x100.
Hilo suffered a potential blow to its title hopes when its boys 4x100 relay team was disqualified.
In field events, where competitors’ trial marks are carried over to today’s finals, Kaimukï’s Vaioleti Mikaele recorded a mark of 147 feet in the girls discus, likely to be a winning mark. Mikaele is the defending champion. Radford’s Mamaitaloa Fiaseu was second in 128-7.
