Unknown odor shuts down Satellite City Hall office

Advertiser Staff

The Kalihi/Kapalama Satellite City Hall and the Motor Vehicle License & Permitting office at City Square was closed for much of yesterday after several people complained of feeling ill from a bad smell.

The building was vacated about 7:45 a.m. after the fire department responded to a complaint of an unknown odor.

Two women were taken to a hospital in stable condition, one complaining of difficulty breathing and lightheadedness and the other suffering primarily from anxiety, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department. A third person was treated at the scene, Cheplic said.

A fire department hazardous materials team determined there was no health hazard and the incident was classified as a nuisance odor at the offices at 1199 Dillingham Blvd.

The state Office of Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response took samples for lab analysis.
