MADRID — Ninth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the Madrid Open final with a 7-6 (1), 6-3 victory over France’s Amelie Mauresmo on Saturday.
The 11th-ranked Dane, who hasn’t dropped a set this week to reach her third final of the season, will face either top-ranked Dinara Safina of Russia or Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder.
Both Wozniacki and Mauresmo struggled with their serve early on the clay, allowing three breaks each in the opening set. Wozniacki then jumped out to a 5-0 lead before clinching the tiebreaker.
Both players improved their serve for the second set, but Wozniacki still broke Mauresmo twice. Wozniacki saved two break points in the ninth game before serving out the match.
