Honolulu Marathon early signups set

The Honolulu Marathon will hold its early registration Saturday and Sunday at Sports Authority in Waikele.

The 37th Honolulu Marathon is Dec. 13 at 5 a.m.

The early entry fee is the same as last year, $30.

Registration at Sports Authority Waikele is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Mail-ins of the early entry form will be accepted between Saturday and May 31. The forms will be available at more than 50 O'ahu sports and fitness outlets.

During the regular registration period, Hawai'i residents will be eligible for a $85 fee, $20 less than last year.

In the second period, from the end of October until Nov. 13, the fee for Hawai'i residents is $115, also $20 lower than 2008.

After Nov. 13, the late entry fee is $225.

SURFING

IRONS ELIMINATED

Kaua'i's Andy Irons lost in the third round of the Billabong Pro Tahiti men's contest yesterday.

The final day of the event was run in 3- to 5-foot waves at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

California's Bobby Martinez defeated Irons, 13.17-10.16.

Martinez went on to win the contest and the $40,000 first-place check.

Irons is on a sabbatical from the 2009 ASP World Tour, but he accepted an invitation from Billabong to compete in Tahiti. He was the only Hawai'i surfer to make it to the final day.

Irons is expected to compete in only a few other events this year.

SOFTBALL

'SWORDS SIGN FOUR

Chaminade has signed four Hawai'i players to play volleyball next season.

They are Alzie Auelua, a 5-foot-10 middle blocker, a Radford High alum who is transferring from Western New Mexico; Crystal Powell, a 5-10 outside hitter from Word of Life; Kylee Pedro, a 5-10 middle blocker from Mid-Pacific and Whitney Viveiros, a 5-10 outside hitter from Kamehameha.

BASKETBALL

2 GUARDS TO HPU

Hawai'i Pacific has signed two junior college guards for its men's basketball team.

Greg Thomas, a 6-foot, 195-pound transfer, averaged 9.5 points and seven assists per game in two seasons for from Aiken (S.C.) Technical College.

Reggie New, a 6-1, 185 transfer from Seminole (Okla.) State College, averaged 10 points per game in two seasons.

GOLF

UHH'S ODA HONORED

University of Hawai'i-Hilo's Kula Oda was named NCAA Division II West Region tennis coach of the year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The Vulcans finished the season 8-8 and were ranked 27th by the ITA.
