New Mexico State tops Louisiana Tech in WAC baseball

Advertiser Staff

Mike Sodders and Kyle Decater each drove in two runs to back the strong pitching of Tyler Sturdevant to lift fourth-seeded New Mexico State over second-seeded Louisiana Tech, 6-5, tonight in the third game of the NAPA Auto Parts Western Athletic Conference baseball tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Aggies (43-15) will advance to tomorrow’s 7 p.m. game against the winner of San Jose State-Louisiana Tech (29-21) elimination game, which is set for 11 a.m. tomorrow.
Sturdevant (7-5) pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned), seven hits and four walks with five strikeouts for NMSU. Scott Coffman added a scoreless eighth and Justin Cooper allowed a run in the ninth, but stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on base for his second save.
Dylan Moseley (4-4) gave up five runs, eight hits and two walks, while striking out two in 3 2/3 innings for LA Tech.
Devon Dageford drove in all of Tech’s runs with an RBI single and three-run home run.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Nick Grunenwald walked with one out and took second when Kevin Winn grounded out on a chopper to third. Devon Dageford’s ground single up the middle scored Grunenwald.
The Aggie stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Richard Stout led off with a squib single to shortstop and scored on Nate Shaver’s double to left-center to tie the game at 1. Jeffrey Farnham’s ground out to third froze the Shaver at second, where he ended up scoring on Bryan Marquez’s double to right-center to make it 2-1. Mike Sodders’ triple to right-center scored Marquez.
Leo Aguirre walked to lead off the fourth and Kyle Decater homered to right-center to increase the Aggies’ lead to 5-1.
Marquez led off the fifth with a walk against reliever Jamey Bradshaw and scored on Sodders’ double to center to make it 6-1.
The Bulldogs got three with one swing in the top of the seventh. Patrick Thomas reached first on second baseman Justin Lucero’s fielding error and Grunenwald walked. Winn’s flyout to right allowed Thomas to advance to third. Grunenwald stole second before Dageford drilled an 0-2 offering to dead center for a three-run home run to pull LA Tech to 6-4.
