A record 52 O‘ahu public and private high schools will receive a share of the $100,000 raised from the Times Supermarkets and Kraft Foods in Hawai‘i’s annual “Shop and Score” program that enables schools to purchase athletic equipment.
Students, parents, alumni, and other fans of O‘ahu high schools accumulated points for their school of choice by purchasing Kraft Foods and other participating sponsors’ products at Times Supermarkets. Each school’s share is based on the percentage of total points earned and will enable each to purchase adidas athletic equipment and uniforms.
Castle High School accumulated the most points and earned nearly $12,000 worth of athletic equipment and uniforms. Waipahu, Kaimuki, Kalani and Roosevelt followed.
“Athletic programs need our support now more than ever. In the nine years that Shop and Score has been around, the program has provided continued support to Oahu high schools and donated $700,000 in of sports equipment and uniforms,” said Gerald Shintaku, business manager of Kraft Foods in Hawai‘i. “The Shop and Score program is designed so that all schools benefit, as each participating school is guaranteed a minimum of $500 in athletic equipment and uniforms.”
As part of the Shop and Score program, American Savings Bank has contributed $25,000 to be used for academic scholarships awarded to outstanding high school students. Seventeen high school students from the participating Shop and Score schools each will be awarded $1,500. Students may begin applying for the scholarship through the Hawaii Community Foundation beginning in February 2010.
