Bill Amis, a two-year starter for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team will be out of action indefinitely due to an injured right foot.
Amis, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, has a torn plantar fascia, and it could take anywhere from a month or more to heal.
"Right now, it's indefinitely," Amis said today after watching his teammates practice. "I want to try and get back as soon as possible."
The Rainbow Warriors are scheduled to open the season against Southern Utah on Friday on the opening night of the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic. Amis will definitely have to sit out Hawai'i's three games in the Rainbow Classic.
"It's a big setback losing a guy who was a starter for us the last two years, but he will heal and he will try to come back," Hawai'i head coach Bob Nash said. "We just hope it's not a prolonged situation."
Amis injured his foot in the first half of Hawai'i's 83-69 exhibition victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i on Thursday. Amis finished with four points in just 11 minutes. In a previous exhibition game against Hawai'i-Hilo, Amis had 27 points and 12 rebounds.
He led the team in rebounding last season with 6.5 per game. He was also second in scoring with 10.7 points per game.
"We just have to look to other guys on the team to pick up the slack," Nash said. "There's not much more we can do at this point."
Amis does have a redshirt season available, although he said that option has not been discussed yet.
"I just want to get back as soon as possible, that's all I'm worried about right now," he said.
