MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

'MAYHEM' MILLER GETS TITLE SHOT TODAY

Mixed martial arts fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller — a crowd favorite in Hawai'i — will get a shot at the Strikeforce middleweight world championship on national television today.

Miller will face Jake Shields for the interim title in the 185-pound class. It will be the semi-main event of the "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers" card at the Sears Centre in Chicago.

The card will be televised on CBS. It will be shown in Hawai'i on a delayed basis starting at 8 p.m.

"My goal is to provide entertainment for the CBS viewers," Miller said. "If they just want to watch a bar fight, they can go to their local brew house. I am going to try to perform so that everybody is talking — that includes walking to the stage, and all the way to the post-fight press conference."

Miller, who trains in Orange County, Calif., has a record of 22-6, including 10-1 in bouts in Hawai'i. His colorful personality in and out of the cage made him a fan favorite in Hawai'i.

"As far as marketing goes, you stick me in front of a camera and a microphone and I am going to blah, blah, blah, and hopefully you are either going to want to watch me get my teeth knocked out or knock somebody's head off," he said.

Shields, who trains in San Francisco, has a record of 23-4-1 and is on a 12-fight win streak.

The main event of the card will feature a heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko of Russia and Brett Rogers of Minnesota.

HIGH SCHOOLS

52 O'AHU SCHOOLS TO SHARE $100,000

A record 52 O'ahu public and private high schools will receive a share of the $100,000 raised from the Times Supermarkets and Kraft Foods in Hawai'i's annual "Shop and Score" program that enables schools to purchase athletic equipment.

Students, parents, alumni, and other fans of O'ahu high schools accumulated points for their school of choice by purchasing Kraft Foods and other participating sponsors' products at Times Supermarkets.

Each school's share is based on the percentage of total points earned and will enable each to purchase adidas athletic equipment and uniforms.

Castle High School accumulated the most points and earned nearly $12,000 worth of athletic equipment and uniforms. Waipahu, Kaimukí, Kalani and Roosevelt followed.

"Athletic programs need our support now more than ever. In the nine years that Shop and Score has been around, the program has provided continued support to O'ahu high schools and donated $700,000 in sports equipment and uniforms," said Gerald Shintaku, business manager of Kraft Foods in Hawai'i.

"The Shop and Score program is designed so that all schools benefit, as each participating school is guaranteed a minimum of $500 in athletic equipment and uniforms."

As part of the Shop and Score program, American Savings Bank has contributed $25,000 to be used for academic scholarships awarded to outstanding high school students.

Seventeen high school students from the participating Shop and Score schools each will be awarded $1,500. Students may begin applying for the scholarship through the Hawaii Community Foundation beginning in February 2010.
