NORFOLK, Va. — Nnemkadi Ogwumike had just dominated for 34 minutes, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds as No. 2 Stanford beat Old Dominion, 89-56, last night.

Then her coach, Tara VanDerveer, said something almost frightening.

"She's even much better than you saw," VanDerveer said.

Ogwumike made 10 of 14 shots, had two steals and nearly outscored the Lady Monarchs for 17 minutes. Her basket 3:49 before halftime gave her 15 points and the Cardinal a 43-17 lead.

"I just tried to do what I need to do for my team," she said, grousing about her three turnovers. "Whatever they need me to do — rebound, pass, anything — I just do it."

Coming off back-to-back trips to the national semifinals and hoping to go further this year behind preseason All-American Jayne Appel, Ogwumike's emergence won't hurt.

Appel added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Cardinal, who play at 25th-ranked Rutgers tomorrow.

Jantel Lavender had 24 points and 13 rebounds, and Sarah Schulze had a career-high 18 points to power the host Buckeyes (1-0) past the Panthers (0-1) in the first round of the preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament.

Kristin Daugherty scored 17 points and Kendel Ross added 14, including four free throws in the final 15.8 seconds, to help the host Flyers upset the Spartans in the season opener for both.

Amber Harris had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and the visiting Musketeers opened overtime with an 8-0 run in beating the Trojans in both teams' season opener.

Coach Debbie Ryan earned her 700th career victory, getting 15 second-half points from Monica Wright as the visiting Cavaliers rolled past the Ramblers.

Jacinta Monroe scored 16 points and the host Seminoles used a 30-0 run for a 34-5 lead in cruising past the Ospreys, who committed 28 turnovers in the season opener for both.

Keisha Hampton had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and the host Blue Demons had many second chances with 23 offensive rebounds to turn back the Chippawas.
