Sunshine, trades help dry Kauai

Kaua'i residents enjoyed the sunshine and trade-wind weather yesterday after being flooded from heavy rains over the weekend.
Yesterday, some residents on Kaua'i's North Shore were short of water after electrical problems shut down a well in Hanalei.
The National Weather Service said trade-wind weather will prevail through the workweek, with scattered showers forecast.
The water shortage affected residents in Hanalei and portions of Wailua Houselots until crews made repairs to the electrical system that pumps water to the reservoirs, Kaua'i county officials said. Repairs should be completed by today. A water tanker with potable water has been placed at Hanalei Park across from the courthouse. Residents need to bring their own containers to transport water, the county said.
Inspectors also found a leak in one of the pipelines that allows Princeville Utilities Inc. to feed the Department of Water's Hanalei system.
Meanwhile, the overflowing streams all ebbed and all roads and bridges were reopened, said Mary Daubert, Kaua'i County spokeswoman.
The water disrupted services to residents in Wailua Houselots on upper Haleilio Road, most of Kíhei Road and all of Kaulana Road.
"There are no problems today from the rains," Daubert said. "All the roads are reopened."
But on Saturday morning, the island was pelted with heavy rainfall that in some areas fell at a rate of 15 inches over a 12-hour period.
