There are the usual suspects at the First Hawaiian Bank 11th state football tournament, yet a new champion will be crowned Dec. 4.
Punahou is not back to defend its Division I title, as it was dethroned in the Interscholastic League of Ho-nolulu by Kamehameha, which is seeking its first championship since 2004.
Otherwise, it's pretty much the same for Baldwin, Farrington, Leilehua and Kahuku. This is Baldwin's fifth consecutive appearance, Farrington's and Leilehua's third year in a row and Kahuku's sixth in the past seven years.
Then there is Big Island Division I champion Honoka'a. The Dragons are making their tournament debut after winning their first league title since 1974.
"I was awestruck already, meeting the Kahukus, the Farringtons," Dragons first-year coach Fred Lau said. "Kaua'i, what a program. We had an opportunity to play them this summer. Just being with (this group), is so different."
Because there wasn't any need for playoffs, there were no games over the weekend. Honoka'a scrimmaged Division II champion Hawai'i Prep to keep sharp.
"The kids are walking on clouds," Lau said. "They're all excited. A couple of practices, we had to mellow them down. We had a scrimmage with HPA. Very quick whistles because these kids are just waiting for the big game."
The Dragons play Farrington, 7 p.m. Friday at Kealekehe.
There's also excitement on Maui because the Leilehua-Baldwin game Friday will be televised statewide on OC 16. Kickoff is 6 p.m.
Baldwin coach A.J. Roloos said he tried to suppress the information from his players, who were thrilled about being on TV. It's the first football broadcast from Maui by OC 16.
"It's good for the island," Roloos said about the telecast.
Leilehua, which won the title in 2007 and lost in last year's championship to Punahou, is taking 77 players on three different flights to Maui Friday morning, coach Nolan Tokuda said. Even though the Mules played the Bears last year at War Memorial, the players will do a walk-through when they arrive. It's the first time in the state tournament for more than half of Leilehua's players, who were on the JV last year or were promoted from this season's JV team.
Some tidbits on the teams:
• Kahuku (11-0) is the only undefeated team in Division I.
• Three Division I teams lost to Division II teams from their respective leagues during the season. Kamehameha (10-1) lost to ILH Division II champion 'Iolani (10-2); Baldwin lost to MIL Division II champion Lahainaluna; and Honoka'a lost to BIIF Division II champion Hawai'i Prep.
• Kaua'i (9-0) and Hawai'i Prep (10-0) are the only unbeaten teams in Division II. Kaua'i beat Honoka'a and Lahainaluna in the preseason.
Some tidbits on personalities:
• The three winningest active coaches are in the Division II tournament.
'Iolani's Wendell Look (133-90-3) and Lahainaluna co-coach Robert Watson (120-83-6) are in the 100-win club. 'Aiea's Wendell Say (99-78-1) is closing in on the mark.
• Darren Johnson may not be coaching, but he has a vested interest in this year's tournament. The former Kailua and Kaimukí coach's son, Kawehena, is a freshman starting defensive back for Kahuku. Johnson's nephews are Honoka'a quarterback Sage Johnson and Kamehameha defensive lineman Maka Pickard.
