KITV extends 10 p.m. news 1 hour

 • U.S. senators question TV mergers here, nationwide

Lineup changes in local television news continue, with KITV announcing it will eliminate its late-night "Seinfeld" reruns to expand its 10 p.m. weekday newscast to an hourlong show.

KITV, in a news release posted on its Web site, said it will roll out the lengthened newscast tonight. It will be followed by ABC News' "Nightline" at 11 p.m., giving KITV a 90-minute news block.

"Given recent changes in the market, we believe there's a positive message in expanding our local coverage," Mike Rosenberg, KITV president, said in the press statement.

The local television news business has undergone massive changes in recent weeks, with a shared services agreement between KGMB9, KHNL and K5 taking effect. KGMB and KHNL combined news operations with most of KHNL's news staff being let go. Some news shows are simultaneously broadcast on KGMB and KHNL.

KITV said the one-hour newscast will provide an advantage, giving it more time to explore issues such as the economy and health care.

The station said fans can still watch "Seinfeld" at 6:30 p.m. weekdays.
