UH's Flemings selected as WAC player of week

University of Hawai'i forward Roderick Flemings was named the Western Athletic Conference men's basketball player of the week yesterday for his role in helping the Rainbow Warriors get off to a 2-0 start this season.

Flemings had consecutive double-double performances in UH's Rainbow Classic wins over Southern Utah and McNeese State with 23 points and 12 rebounds Friday, and 14 points and 10 rebounds Sunday night.

It is the second such WAC honor for the senior from Dallas.

ALASKA ANCHORAGE ROUTS UHH WOMEN

Nicci Miller scored 23 points to lead host Alaska Anchorage to a 102-44 women's basketball victory over Hawai'i-Hilo last night.

Alaska Anchorage is 2-0. UHH is 0-2.

Kirsty Imai led the Vulcans with 10 points.

The Seawolves led 56-21 at halftime.

ST. FRANCIS ALUM HARRINGTON HONORED

Nevada junior outside hitter and St. Francis alumna Kylie Harrington was named the Western Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week yesterday.

It is the first WAC weekly honor for the player from Honolulu.

Harrington tallied 54 kills, 22 digs, three assists and two aces as Nevada went 2-1 in WAC matches last week to clinch a spot in the upcoming WAC Tournament.

Harrington averaged 4.91 kills per set on .283 hitting to lead the Pack in kills in all three matches. In the first match of the week at Fresno State, she had a career-high 25 kills in Nevada's 3-1 win. In Thursday's 3-1 loss to New Mexico State, Harrington totaled a team-high 11 kills. In the final match of the week, she had a match-high 18 kills and hit a career-best .571 as Nevada swept Louisiana Tech, 3-0.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

CISNEROS, PADILLA HEADLINE 1 KONA CARD

Chris Cisneros of Hilo MMA and Kaleo Padilla of Kona BC will fight in the 185-pound main event of "Lights Out," a mixed martial arts card Saturday at Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua, Kona.

Doors open at 4 p.m. for the card, which will feature 50 Hawai'i fighters, according to promoter X-1 World Events.

Hilo's Wesley "Cabbage" Correira, a former UFC heavyweight contender, will fight Kona's Elward Westbrook in the co-main event.

Fighting camps with fighters on the card include BJ Penn's MMA, Hilo MMA, Kona BC, Team MMAD, Average Joes, PFC, HIBC, Team Assassin, Universal Combat, Bang Inc., Demon MMA, 808 Fight Factory, Hawaiian MMA, Knoa BC and Team Submit.

Tickets are $100, $50 and $25 and available at Sergio Mamone Gym, CD Wizard, Lulu's, Big Island Surf, Hilo Fight Company, Pacific Island Fitness, Big Island Built and Waikoloa Chevron.

KAUA'I'S MELAMED WINS AT GROMSEARCH

Nage Melamed of Kaua'i won the girls 16-under title at the Rip Curl GromSearch national final at Salt Creek in Dana Point, Calif., on Saturday.

Melamed won $500 and a trip to the international finals at Bells Beach, Australia, in April.

Melamed beat Lakey Peterson as time expired to win the U.S. title.

Kolohe Andino of San Clemente, Calif., won the boys 16-under title, ahead of Hawai'i's Nathan Carvalho, California's Taylor Thorne and Hawai'i's Koa Smith.

Smith also placed third in the 14-under division.
