UH Hilo takes major PacWest volleyball awards

Hawai‘i-Hilo won the major PacWest Conference volleyball postseason awards.
Senior middle Fabiane Seben was named Player of the Year and coach Bruce Atkinson was named Coach of the Year. Junior setter Katie Swenson was named Newcomer of the Year.
UH Hilo (25-1) won the PacWest title and begins play in today’s NCAA Division II West Regional against Alaska-Anchorage in San Bernardino, Calif. The Vulcans are currently ranked 14th nationally.
Seben was named to the all-conference first team along with outside hitter Josimara Pinheiro, who was a repeat selection. Hawai‘i Pacific junior middle Kelly Balanay earned her third first-team honor, and Brigham Young-Hawai‘i outside hitter Losaline Faka’osi earned her first first-team honor.
Hawai‘i players on the second team were BYUH middle Tanza Buroker, UH Hilo opposite Kawena Cubi-Otineru, Swenson, and HPU outside Mariana Souza.
HPU’s Kyra Pelayo (libero) and Julia Gruszecka (outside) were named to honorable mention team along with Chaminade outside Courtney Lorusso.
Dixie State’s Jayci Jeffress was named Libero of the Year and Grand Canyon setter Kristen Preach was named Freshman of the Year.
