Talk to explore shipwreck discovery
| |||
The Hawaii Academy of Science features a Science Cafe presentation tonight on a complex astronomical computing device discovered in a 2,000-year-old shipwreck in the Aegean Sea.
"The Antikythera Mechanism," a corroded stack of bronze gearwheels, was recently X-rayed and analyzed, and astronomer Gareth Wynn-Williams, of the University of Hawai'i's Institute for Astronomy, will discuss who made it, what purpose it served and what the implications of the discovery are.
The event at P.F. Chang's Ward is free and open to the public, with a no-host social/dinner hour at 6 p.m. and the lecture from 7 to 8 p.m.
'EWA SCHOOL CELEBRATES GO GREEN DAY
A "Trashion Show" of fashions made of recycled materials — otherwise headed for the landfill — will highlight 'Ilima Intermediate School's second annual Go Green Day.
The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the 'Ewa Beach school.
It will offer recycling and conservation education, a HI-5 recycling center, waterless carwash, green demonstrations, professional face painting, food, and games and prizes.
