Oahu Choral Society’s season under way

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Symphony Chorus and Chamber Choir will next month present a concert of Christmas music, both classical and contemporary at the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew.
The Oçahu Choral Society — an administrative body that supports the Honolulu Symphony Chorus and the recently formed Honolulu Chamber Choir — is going forward with the concert, set for 5:30 p.m. Dec. 13, and planning for additional 2009/2010 season events despite the Honolulu Symphony’s cancellation of the remainder of its 2009 program.
At a recent strategic planning session, called to evaluate plans in light of the financial difficulties of the Honolulu Symphony, OSC's board of directors committed to presenting and promoting choral music both with the Honolulu Symphony as well as in independent concerts, according to a news release issued by the group.
The Honolulu Symphony Chorus will hold auditions for new members Dec. 16 and Jan. 23. For more information, send e-mail to oahuchoral@gmail.com.
OCS’ ninth annual fundraising banquet, Vivace! will be held Feb. 27 at the Waiçalae Country Club, honoring Aaron Mahi for his contributions to the musical life of Honolulu.
At least two additional concerts are being planned for the remainder of the 2009/2010 season. Details will be announced within the next few weeks, according to the release.
During the 2008/2009 season, OCS presented two concerts: a free event at Blaisdell Auditorium with the Honolulu Symphony and the world premiere of “Voices of Kalaupapa,” a work commissioned by OCS with support from the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts in celebration of the canonization of Father Damien. Both were under the direction of Esther Yoo, OCS's artistic director.
