New Mexico uses big second-half run to defeat Rainbow Warriors

The University of Hawai‘i men’s basketball team could not match a second-half surge by New Mexico in an 83-71 loss tonight.
A crowd of 4,015 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the Rainbow Warriors fall to 2-3 with their third consecutive loss. The Lobos are 5-0.
New Mexico opened the second half with a 25-4 run to take control of a game that was close in the first half.
Jeremy Lay led the ’Bows with a career-high 26 points, and Hiram Thompson added 15.
The first half featured seven lead changes, and the largest lead for either team was six. The ’Bows took a 36-35 lead at intermission.
New Mexico opened the second half with a 14-0 run. The Lobos later went on an 11-3 surge that increased their lead to 60-40 with 13:37 remaining. Hawaiçi never got closer than nine after that.
Hawaiçi played without starting guard Dwain Williams, who was not on the bench with the team last night. He missed practices during the week due to an illness, and what head coach Bob Nash described as “other issues.”
