Five teams from the Hawai'i Pacific Section advanced to the nationals of the largest adult recreational tennis league in the world by winning USTA Super Senior League Hawai'i Pacific Section Championships last weekend. The local finals were played at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex

The winning women's teams were MD Wenokea, captained by Yvonne Darlene Tavares, in the 6.0 Division; Super Senior Moments, captained by Heidi Read, in 7.0; and Luahine, captained by Betty Clark, in 8.0.

Men's winners were Cataract & Vision Center, captained by Gerhard Frohlich, at 7.0, and Eatside SS, captained by Thom Randle, at 8.0.

National championships will be played in April, with sites to be determined.

All the winning teams are from O'ahu except Super Senior Moments, which came over from Kaua'i.

USTA League was established in 1980. It has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to more than 706,000 players across the nation today.

VERCRUYSSEN TOPS OVERALL IN TRAMPOLINE

Nani Vercruyssen, 17, a Roosevelt High senior, finished first in the overall rankings for the top female trampoline gymnast in the United States.

Vercruyssen competed in Las Vegas last week with the other top U.S. elite athletes to determine who would be selected to the U.S. National Team to compete in the World Championships in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in November.

Vercruyssen will compete in her first senior-level World Championships as possibly the youngest in the field of 20- to 40-year-old women.
