UH-Hilo stops Dixie St. in four

Kawena Cubi-Otineru had 17 kills to lead undefeated and 19th-ranked Hawai'i-Hilo to a 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 victory over Dixie State yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Saint George, Utah.

The Vulcans are 16-0 overall and 6-0 in the PacWest. The Red Storm are 10-4 and 4-1.

Fabiane Seben added 14 kills, and Morgan Bonney 13 for UH-Hilo. Lauren Tonokawa and Josimara Pinheiro each had 18 digs.

The teams play again tonight.

In other Pacific West matches last night:

• Freshman Whitney Viveiros had 16 kills and 24 digs to lift Chaminade to a 25-20, 21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 17-15 victory over Dominican, the Silverswords' first Pacific West victory of the season, at San Rafael, Calif. Sophomore Malilimago Toailoa added 15 kills for the 'Swords (2-13 and 1-5). Dominican fell to 3-13 and 0-5.

• Kylee Nawahine had 15 kills and Lacey Laycock added four aces in Brigham Young-Hawai'i's 25-23, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19 Pacific West victory over Grand Canyon in Phoenix. BYUH is 6-8 and 3-2, Grand Canyon 9-7 and 0-5.

• Breanna Morales had 11 kills to lead Notre Dame de Namur to a 25-22, 25-22, 25- 20 victory over Hawai'i Pacific at Belmont, Calif., handing the Sea Warriors their first PacWest loss of the season. Julia Gruszecka and Natasha Bell each had 11 kills for HPU (7-7 overall, 4-1 PacWest). Notre Dame de Namur is 6-13 and 4-2.

SURFING

HO, BARTELS ADVANCE

Hawai'i surfers Coco Ho and Melanie Bartels advanced to the quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic women's contest yesterday.

The second and third rounds were completed in 1- to 3-foot waves at Dee Why, New South Wales, Australia.

Ho had the best heat of the day, receiving a two-wave score of 14.5 (out of 20) in her third-round victory over Australia's Sally Fitzgibbons.

Ho trailed late in the heat, but received a score of 8.5 on her final wave. Ho is scheduled to face world champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia in the quarterfinals.

Bartels defeated South Africa's Rosanne Hodge in the third round, 8.1-7.5. She is scheduled to face Australia's Rebecca Woods in the quarterfinals.

The contest is the third of seven stops on the 2009 ASP Women's World Tour.

GOLF

MIYAJIMA OUSTED

Maui's Shayna Miyajima shot a 2-over-par 74 yesterday in the final round of the second LPGA Section Qualifier at Venice, Fla., finishing tied for 47th and failing to reach the final qualifier.

Miyajima finished at 13-over 301. The low 30 and ties (296) advanced to the final tournament in December.

Stephanie Connelly of Pasadena, Md., was the medalist after a 71—285.

LEE MISSES CUT

Pearl Country Club's Regan Lee shot a 6-over-par 78 in the second round yesterday, missing the cut by a shot at the 33rd Callaway Golf PGA Assistant Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Lee was tied for 77th at 5-over 149. The low 70 scores and ties advanced to the weekend. Tim Thelen of New Ulm, Texas, shot a 65 for the lead at 131.
