Dixie hands No. 18 Hilo first volleyball loss

Madisyn Fitzgerald had 10 kills as host Dixie State handed 18th-ranked Hawai'i-Hilo its first loss of the season, 27-25, 25-19, 25-21, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference match at St. George, Utah.

Brita Noble added seven kills and 10 digs for the Red Storm (11-4, 5-1). Morgan Bonney and Fabiane Seben each had 11 kills, and Josimara Pinheiro added nine kills and 21 digs for the Vulcans (16-1, 6-1), who squandered two set points in the first set.

  • Kelly Balanay and Mariana Souza each had 11 kills, lifting Hawai'i Pacific (8-7, 5-1) to a 25-16, 25-13, 25-21 win over host Dominican (3-14, 0-6).

  • Whitney Estes had 14 kills, lifting host Grand Canyon (10-7, 1-5) to a 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 15-25, 15-13 victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i (6-9, 3-3). Losaline Faka'osi had 17 kills and 15 digs for the Seasiders.

  • Dan Yang had 19 kills and 14 digs, leading host Academy of Art (14-5, 3-3) to a 25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 26-24 win over Chaminade (2-14, 1-6). Chauntelle Maduli had 15 kills and 10 digs, and Whitney Viveiros added 14 kills and 16 digs for the Silverswords.

    HILO SWEEPS CU

    Eduardo Gutierrez and Logan Montenegro scored goals as Hawai'i-Hilo beat host Chaminade, 2-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's match at Saint Louis field.

    Dane Kaylor made seven saves for the Vulcans (4-5, 3-0). Nicholas Botelho had three shots on goal for the Silverswords (1-5, 0-3).

  • Emily Lambert had a goal and two assists, propelling Hawai'i-Hilo (3-5-1, 2-1) to a 4-0 win over host Chaminade (0-6, 0-3) in a women's match.

  • Brenna Rhoades scored in the 74th minute, lifting Brigham Young-Hawai'i (5-1, 3-1) to a 1-0 victory over host Grand Canyon (4-5-1, 1-3-1) in a women's match.

  • Kyle Ciliento scored in the 103rd minute, leading host Grand Canyon (8-1-1, 5-0) to a 1-0 double overtime victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i (2-5, 1-3) in a men's match.

    BARTELS TIES FOR THIRD

    Melanie Bartels of Wai'anae tied for third place in the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic women's surfing contest yesterday.

    Bartels advanced to the semifinals, then was eliminated by world champion Stephanie Gilmore.

    Brazil's Silvana Lima won the contest, defeating Gimore in the final.

    Coco Ho of Sunset Beach was eliminated in the quarterfinals. She also lost to Gilmore.

    The contest was the third of seven stops on the 2009 ASP Women's World Tour.
