Kaneohe Post Office roof collapses under heavy rains
A large section of the Kaneohe Post Office's roof collapsed early this morning under the weight of heavy rainfall, closing off service to the retail lobby today and to the P.O. Box area until later today, Postal Service spokesman Duke Gonzales said.
Two employees were working inside the building when “a fairly large section of roof” collapsed into a storage area around 2 or 2:30 a.m. today, Gonzales said.
“There were heavy rains, certainly,” Gonzales said. “There was a lot of build up of water.”
There were no injuries and there will be no disruption of usual mail service to customers, Gonzales said.
However, retail customers who need to buy stamps or bring in parcels are being directed to the Kailua Post Office for today, Gonzales said. The P.O. Box area is expected to reopen later today.
Workers are assessing the cost of the damage and cleaning up the debris today, Gonzales said.
He reminded residential and business postal service customers that they can visit usps.com, pay for postage and print out a shipping label for any parcels. A carrier will then come by and pick up any packages.
