Jeremy Higgins passed for three touchdown and ran for another, but it was the defense that came up big to help No. 3 Saint Louis hand No. 6 'Iolani its first Interscholastic League of Honolulu loss, 28-0, last night at Aloha Stadium.

The Crusaders' defense kept the Division II Raiders (7-2 overall, 5-1 ILH) off the board despite three first-half interceptions that gave 'Iolani the ball in Saints' territory. The Crusaders' defense then came up with three interceptions of its own by Chris Santiago, Marcus Umu and Casey Kamakana in the second half to frustrate the Raiders in their quest for a Division I sweep after beating Punahou and Kamehameha earlier this season.

Higgins was 15 of 20 for 283 yards with TD passes of 60 yards to Duke Bukoski, 36 yards to Sean Ahlo and 29 yards to Jordan Fukumoto. He also ran one in from 9 yards. He completed eight of his first 11 passes, but two were intercepted to keep the game close in the first half for the Crusaders (6-2, 3-2).

Defense was a big reason Saint Louis took a 14-0 lead into the half. The Raiders had three interceptions — two off Higgins by Reid Saito and Sean Nada and one off Marcus Mariota by Matt Padaca — giving them starting field position inside Saints' territory each time. But the Raiders' failed to score, losing the ball on downs twice and punting on the third.

The Crusaders also sacked 'Iolani QB Jarrett Arakawa three times. He was 13 of 49 for 182 yards, including 6 of 28 with three picks in the second half.

Saint Louis scored on its second series of the game when Higgins hit Bukoski on a 60-yard TD pass for a 7-0 lead with 6:33 left in the first quarter.

The Crusaders lost the ball on interceptions their next three series and punted on a fourth. The Raiders then threatened later in the second quarter, driving to the Saints' 6. But an errant toss from Arakawa was recovered by Marcus Rodrigues at the Saints' 11 with 4:11 left in the half.

On Saint Louis' fourth play of the series on first-and-10 at its 23, Higgins connected with Bukoski on a medium-range pass. Bukoski broke about four tackles along the way before being stopped at the Raiders' 9. On first-and-goal, Higgins faked a handoff to the running back to the right and scooted around for a 9-yard TD run with 48 seconds left in the half. Arron Goo's PAT made it 14-0 at the break.

As he was being moved into the ambulance, Kamehameha's Kamu Morita, one of the players who tackled Kim on the play, went up to console the player and his parents.

"First class," Botelho said of the gesture. "That's why we play the game, for sportsmanship."
