MILILANI — No. 8 Wai'anae scored early and often in a 54-41 win over No. 5 Mililani in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West Division regular-season finale for both teams last night.

The Seariders rushed for 465 yards and seven scores in front of about 3,500 fans at John Kauinana Stadium to improve to 5-3 overall, 5-1 in the Red West. The Trojans dropped their second consecutive game to fall to 6-2 and 4-2.

"I'm glad for our offense, our offense did a hell of a job," Wai'anae coach Dan Matsumoto said. "But give credit to Mililani, at first, they were scoring at will and we never felt like we had the win secured."

The Seariders flexed their muscles on the opening drive. Wai'anae ran on all seven of its plays, driving 68 yards, highlighted by a 16-yard touchdown run by James Wilson.

After Mililani got a 32-yard field goal from Spencer Sword, Wai'anae extended its lead on a 1-yard Keoni Napierala-Rose TD run with 3:18 left in the first quarter. Terrence Akao's PAT made the score 13-3.

The Trojans cut it to 13-6 after a 35-yard field goal by Sword and tied it on a 6-yard scoring strike from Trent McKinney to Taz Stevenson.

Wai'anae answered with a quick-strike, two-play drive to reclaim the lead. James Wilson's 70-yard run around right end set-up Napierala-Rose's 10-yard TD run with 3:43 left in the second quarter.

Mililani went to the air on its next drive and Mc-Kinney connected on passes downs for first downs to Stevenson, Sword and a 30-yard pass to Kama Paulo. Two plays later, McKinney found Bryson Calma for a 5-yard TD pass to tie it at 20.

The Seariders punched in their fourth rushing touchdown of the first half on Puletua Wilson's 35-yard quarterback draw with 16 seconds until the half. Wai'anae led 27-20 at the intermission.

The Seariders rushed for 295 yards in the first half and showed no signs of slowing down to start the second.

Wai'anae marched 57 yards on five plays, capped by Henry Me-deiros' 34-yard TD run around left end to seize a 34-20 lead.

Mililani tried for a quick answer, but McKinney was picked off on the very next play. Wai'anae's Guy-son Amina returned the interception 55 yards to the Trojans' 5-yard line and three plays later Puletua Wilson found James Wilson on a screen pass and 14-yard touchdown.

Wai'anae extended its lead in the third quarter with an eight-play, 46-yard drive that was capped by Puletua Wilson's 22-yard TD run on third down. Akao's PAT made it 48-20 and 28 unanswered points by Wai'anae.

The Trojans closed to 48-26 after McKinney connected with Hassan Richardson on a 17-yard TD pass with 1:52 left in the third quarter.

But there was no slowing the Seariders. Puletua Wilson threw a 22-yard pass to Henry Correa-Young on first down and three plays later, he called his own number. Facing third-and-6, Puletua Wilson couldn't find an open receiver and scrambled along the right sideline for a 51-yard TD run.

However, the Trojans put together a seven-play, 75-yard drive with Stevenson punching in a 1-yard score with 10:12 left to play. McKinney found Ethan Cook on the two-point conversion pass to make it 54-34.

Mililani got a late score with 2:11 left on a 20-yard pass from McKinney to Calma to cut it to 54-41.

"Wai'anae's a tough team and they came in here and made more plays than us," Trojans' coach Darnell Arceneaux said. "We'll have to regroup going into the playoffs."

Leilehua, Wai'anae and Kapolei finished as the top three in the Red West and earned byes in next week's OIA Tournament. Mili-lani, which sat atop the league standings for much of the regular season, slipped to fourth and will play Kaimuki in a first-round game.
