Mules earn OIA Red West top seed

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

WAHIAWA — Andrew Manley completed 17 of 23 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns in the first half last night as Leilehua routed Waipahu 38-8 to earn a share of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Western Division championship with Wai'anae.

An estimated crowd of 2,200 at Hugh Yoshida Stadium watched the Mules — ranked No. 7 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improve to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the OIA Red West. Wai'anae also finished 5-1 in the West, but Leilehua earns the division's No. 1 seed entering the league playoffs based on its head-to-head victory over the Seariders.

Until last night, it was an uphill journey for the Mules, who opened the regular season with a 21-18 loss at Mililani.

"This shows how far we've come," said Manley, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior. "We started this season slow, but we came together as a family, especially in the past three weeks."

Leilehua pounced on the Marauders (3-5, 1-5), with Dillon Pau'u recovering a fumble on Waipahu's first play from scrimmage and Manley connecting with Kamana Akagi on a 5-yard TD pass immediately afterward for a 7-0 lead.

On their next possession, Manley and Akagi connected again on a 54-yard TD pass and Sly Izumigawa's extra point made it 14-0 with 6:46 left in the first quarter.

Waipahu's triple-option offense, which racked up 335 yards rushing in last week's loss to Wai'anae, was further hampered when fullback Victor Moananu injured his ankle and quarterback Mark Bumanglag re-injured his knee early in the first half.

"It affected what we do," said Marauders coach Sean Saturnio. "But (the Mules') defense has a lot of speed, and they played really well."

Manley's third TD pass was a 25-yarder to Darrien Shealy in the second quarter, and he added an 80-yard scoring toss to Blaine Furtado with 2:23 left in the half.
