Hälawa inmate arrested

Advertiser Staff

A 22-year-old Hälawa prison inmate was arrested Wednesday after a fight in the prison recreation yard earlier in the day apparently resulted in fatal injuries to an inmate.

James Gouveia was arrested at the facility on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Police were told that Gouveia had been arguing with a 46-year-old inmate about 8:30 a.m. before he punched the older man several times. The victim fell and suffered a head injury, police said.

The injured man was found lying in the recreation yard and was taken to the prison's infirmary.

City paramedics were called to the prison at 8:49 a.m. and rushed the man to The Queen's Medical Center, where he later died.

Gouveia had been serving time at Hälawa after being convicted of car theft and firearms offenses, court records show.

The city Department of the Medical Examiner was scheduled to perform an autopsy yesterday on the inmate who died. His name was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
