Soccer: Maurice Edu tweets he was racially abused by own fans

Associated Press

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu tweeted that he was racially abused by two of his own club's fans after a 4-1 loss to Romanian club Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old Californian, who is black, didn't take part in Tuesday's game at Ibrox Park.

"Not sure what hurt more: result last nite or being racially abused by couple of r own fans as I'm getting in my car," Edu wrote Wednesday on his Twitter page.

Edu, who played for last year's U.S. Olympic team, left Major League Soccer's Toronto FC to sign a five-year contract with Rangers in August 2008. He scored two goals in 12 appearances last season and has been sidelined since knee surgery in June.

David Edgar, spokesman for the Rangers Supporters Trust, said the responsible fans should be punished.

"We would absolutely condemn that if that's the case," Edgar said. "These are not Rangers fans, and they should be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
