A former Maui police officer shot his wife and himself in an apparent murder-suicide Monday, the Maui Police Department said today.
Officials today identified the victims as Barry W. Alford, 59, and Karolyn Alford, 58. The two were found dead of gunshot wounds in their Makawao home Monday night.
An autopsy performed on the bodies today determined that Barry Alford died of a single gunshot wound to his head. His death was classified as a suicide, police said.
Karolyn Alford was shot once in the head and chest, police said. The medical examiner classified her death as a homicide.
Neighbors reported hearing yelling and gunshots from the Alford home at about 10 p.m. Monday. About 15 minutes, police arrived at the home and found the bodies.
Barry Alford joined the Maui Police Department in April 1985 and resigned in July 1987. He was rehired in June 1990, but resigned again as a lieutenant in November 2000. Alford returned to the force again in February 2003 as a sergeant, but resigned in April 2008.
Karolyn Alford was a former employee of Kapalua Land Co.
