Gala event featuring Norah Jones canceled at Hawaii Writers Conference

The Hawai'i Writers Foundation today announced the cancellation of its gala fundraising event, featuring Norah Jones in concert that was scheduled for Friday.

In a news release, organizers of the not-for-profit organization attributed the cancellation to the challenges of raising corporate funding in a struggling economy.
Refunds will be given to all gala attendees and ticket buyers, the news release said. An e-mail notification has already been sent to each ticket purchaser with specific instructions on the refund process and ticket holders can call 737-0360 for more information.
"This was an intensely difficult decision for us. Nonprofit organizations hold fundraisers to raise money for their causes. Even with the generous support of our existing sponsors, the effect of the economic downturn has made it impossible for us to proceed without a loss. We hope that the community will continue to reach out to nonprofit organizations in need despite the challenges of successful fundraising in this uncertain economic climate," said Hawai'i Writers Conference founder John Tullius.
The conference will continue as scheduled. Opening ceremonies will take place at 9 a.m. Friday, featuring a triple chant performed by Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole, accompanied by his grandmother Dr. Pualani Kanahele and his mother Kekuhi Keali'ikanaka'ole.
