LOS ANGELES — Ned Colletti didn't see much of the game.
The Dodgers' general manager was too busy wheeling and dealing to set his lineup for postseason play, making moves that overshadowed Los Angeles' 5-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 10 innings last night.
The Dodgers acquired first baseman Jim Thome from the Chicago White Sox and right-hander Jon Garland from Arizona in separate trades announced late in the game.
Los Angeles received cash considerations and gave up minor league infielder Justin Fuller for Thome, who has 23 homers and 74 RBIs this season.
The Diamondbacks will get a player to be named for Garland, who is 8-11 with a 4.28 ERA.
"You're always trying to improve the club," Colletti said. "I've been trying to get a starting pitcher for a while."
After the game, Garland made what he called a "definitely weird" walk from the visitors' clubhouse to the Dodgers' room. He was scheduled to pitch the series finale against the Dodgers on Thursday.
Rusty Ryal homered against James McDonald (4-4) to lead off the 10th, putting Arizona on track for its fifth consecutive victory.
BRAVES 5, MARLINS 2:
Omar Infante hit a two-run triple in the seventh and Kenshin Kawakami pitched six effective innings to carry visiting Atlanta past Florida. Kawakami (7-10) allowed one run and six hits in six innings with five strikeouts.
REDS SWEEP PIRATES:
Brandon Phillips hit one homer and had another overturned after a review, and host Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh, 6-3, to complete a doubleheader sweep. Phillips had a solo homer in the first and had another solo shot overturned in the fifth. Replays showed that his drive down the left-field line had actually veered foul, leading to a reversal. In the first game, the Reds' Darnell McDonald score on a wild pitch from Jesse Chavez (0-4) in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-3 win.
PADRES 3, NATIONALS 1:
Livan Hernandez lost to San Diego for the second time in less than a month — and with his second team — despite throwing a complete game for visiting Washington. Hernandez (7-9) lost, 8-3, to the Padres at Petco Park on Aug. 6 while with the Mets.
ASTROS 5, CUBS 3:
Carlos Lee hit a two-run home run and drove in four runs, leading visiting Houston over Chicago. Roy Oswalt (8-5) pitched seven strong innings for Houston. He allowed two runs on six hits, striking out three and walking one.
