Hawaii tied for fifth in USGA women's tourney

Hawai'i is tied for fifth place after yesterday's first round of the USGA Women's State Team Championship at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Punahou junior Cyd Okino, 15, led Hawai'i with a 3-over-par 75. University of Hawai'i graduate Xyra Suyetsugu was next at 76, giving the team (best two of three scores) a total of 151. Punahou freshman Kacie Komoto, the youngest player in the tournament at 14, shot 80.
Georgia leads with 1-under 143.

JOBE WINS SINGLES
University of Hawai'i volunteer assistant Ikaika Jobe made it 2-for-2 at the Kailua Racquet Club Saturday, defeating Mika Maatta, 6-4, 7-5, in the championship match of the Hawai'i Open Singles tournament.
The event was sponsored by longtime Hawai'i pro Jay Grollman, who donated the $2,500 purse as a going away present to the tennis community. Grollman is moving to Florida.
Jobe, who won the Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles at KRC last month with UH standout Dennis Lajola, also beat Hawai'i Pacific All-American Hendrick Bode, 6-4, 7-5, in semifinals. Maatta won out over doubles partner Jan Axel Tribler in the other semi. Tribler had to retire with a shoulder injury after Maatta won the first set 7-6 (7-4) and Tribler the second, 6-7 (4-7).

SEBEN SPURS HILO
Fabiane Seben had 11 kills and hit .667 as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Saint Martin's, 25-14, 25-17, 25-17, yesterday in Lacey, Wash.
"We were able to work on a few things we hope to improve on in the upcoming games," said UHH head coach Bruce Atkinson, whose team improved to 4-0 after hitting .300 (40 kills, 90 attempts, 13 errors). "We worked better as a unit tonight."
Saint Martin's is 0-1.
