Kalaheo men remain in critical condition after 3-car crash
KOLOA – Two Kalaheo men who were injured in a three-car crash yesterday afternoon, remain in critical condition at The Queen’s Medical Center.
According to a preliminary report, Maxwell Gonsalves and Wayne Rita, both 23, were passengers in a west-bound Toyota sedan driven by a 20-year-old Kalaheo man when he lost control of the vehicle, spun around and collided with an east-bound Ford sport utility vehicle driven by a 63-year-old Kapa‘a man.
The SUV was then rear-ended by another Toyota sedan that was heading east. The driver of this sedan and his passenger were not injured, and were able to drive home.
The 20-year-old Kalaheo man and 63-year-old Kapa‘a man were taken to Wilcox Hospital and were treated and released.
The crash occurred on Kaumuali‘i Highway near mile marker eight west of the Maluhia Road junction at around 4:42 pm.
Following the crash, the highway was closed for about two-and-a-half hours, and east-bound traffic was diverted to Oma‘o Road while traffic heading west was redirected to Maluhia Road.
