Skating: Koreans star in speed skate World Cup

BEIJING — South Korea took the top three spots in the men’s 1,500-meter event at the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup meet on Saturday.
Sung Si-bak won the race in 2 minutes, 25.386 seconds, finishing ahead of Lee Ho-suk in 2:25.395 and Lee Jung-su in 2:25.492.
Sung took silver in the 500, with his time of 41.544 seconds bettered by compatriot Kwak Yoong-gy’s 41.526. American Jeff Simon was third in 41.665.
The women’s 1,500 was won by China’s 18-year-old Zhou Yang in 2:28.600. Lee Eun-byul of South Korea was second in 2:29.014 while American Katherine Reutter took the bronze in 2:29.095.
Chinese women won Saturday’s double, with Wang Meng claiming the 500 in 43.430 seconds, beating out Canadians Jessica Gregg (44.241) and Marianne St. Gelais (52.085).
Beijing is the first of four meetings in the Short Track World Cup, with upcoming events in South Korea, Canada and the United States.
