Man critically hurt in Waipahu beating

Advertiser Staff

A man who asked for a cigarette was beaten with beer bottles, baseball bats and run over three times late Friday night in a Waipahu neighborhood.

The 25-year-old man was taken in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center after the 11:20 p.m. incident and seven people _ three men, three women and a 15-year-old girl _ were arrested on charges of attempted murder. The fight occurred at Pupunohe Street and Pupupuhi Street in Waipahu.
According to police, after the man asked for a cigarette, one of the men in a group punched him and seven to eight female adults jumped him, punching and kicking him. Beer bottles were broken on the man’s face and when the man tried to get away, a jeep struck him three times. Two men got out of the jeep with baseball bats and struck him. A third man got out of the jeep and punched and kicked the man.
Arrested on charges of the investigation of attempted murder were Paulo Ioane, 20, of Kawaihuna Street, Jeremiah Leota, 26, of Pupupuhi Street, Jimmy Robinson, 19, of Pupuole Street, Ana Lealiiee, 45, of Pupuole Street, Eliza Lealiiee, 19, of Pupuole Street, and Jamel Leota 25, Pupupuhi Street.
Court records show that Jeremiah Leota was charged with third degree assault in 2001, but the case was dropped later that same year.
The area commonly called the pupus has been called troublesome by police and is bounded by low-income housing because of the street names _Pupupuhi, Pupuole, Pupunohe, Pupukahi, Pupumomi, Pupukui, Pupukupa and so forth - clustered mauka and makai of Farrington Highway near the Waipahu Shopping Center.
