Kaneko, Wise in running at LPGA qualifier

Amateur Ayaka Kaneko, a Sacred Hearts graduate, shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday in the third round of the LPGA's first Sectional Qualifying Tournament at the Mission Hills Country Club in Palm Springs, Calif.
Kaneko moved up from 21st to a tie for sixth at 211 in the 72-player field.
Lehua Wise, a Kaua'i High graduate who played on the Duramed Futures Tour, was in a tie for eighth at 74—212.
Amanda Blumenhurst, of Scottsdale, Ariz., leads with 65—202.
The top 30 and ties after today's fourth round advance to the Final Qualifying Tournament in December.
SURFING
ISLE SURFERS OUSTED
Hawai'i surfers Kekoa Bacalso and Roy Powers were eliminated in the fourth round of the Hurley Pro Trestles men's surfing contest yesterday.
The final day of the contest was run in 2- to 3-foot waves at Lower Trestles, Calif.
Bacalso lost to nine-time former world champion Kelly Slater of Florida. Powers lost to California's Taylor Knox.
Mick Fanning of Australia won the contest and received $105,000 — the largest first-place check ever awarded in a surfing contest.

HILO GOES TO 12-0
Josimara Pinheiro had 14 kills and Fabiane Seben 12 as 25th-ranked Hawai'i-Hilo beat visiting Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23, last night in a Pacific West Conference match.
Katie Swenson added 39 assists and five digs for the Vulcans (12-0, 2-0). Kylee Nawahine and Tara Huckvale each had seven kills for the Seasiders (3-7, 0-1).
CROSS COUNTRY
FORRESTER, MALLEY WIN
University of Hawai'i's Jessica Forrester and Hawai'i Pacific's Dany Malley won the individual titles while Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept the team competition of the Big Wave Invitational yesterday at the Kane'ohe Klipper golf course.
Forrester finished the 4-kilometer women's course in 15 minutes, 5.44 seconds. Teammate Ashley Aitken was second (15:15.45) and HPU's Quinn Horochuk third (15:38.12).
Malley completed the 5-kilometer men's course in 16:39.22. BYUH's Brendan McMaster was second (16:44.83) and UH-Hilo's Stefand Barlois third (16:49.65).
BYUH scored 38 points to edge host UH (40) in the women's division, and held off HPU 30-35 in the men's competition.

HILO SWEEPS HPU
Ivan Mercado made 11 saves and Logan Montenegro had a goal and an assist as host Hawai'i-Hilo beat Hawai'i Pacific, 3-1, yesterday in Pacific West Conference men's soccer at Amauulu Field.
George Ichimaru and Eduardo Gutierrez also scored for the Vulcans (2-5, 1-0).
Chance Bukoski scored and Sven Blauth had four shots on goal for the Sea Warriors (3-1, 0-1), who outshot Hilo 18-9.
