TONIGHT'S MUST-SEES
FLASHFORWARD DEBUT, 7 P.M., ABC
For a few moments, this seems like your standard cop show. FBI agents (Joseph Fiennes and John Cho) are trailing suspects; then
Well, then everyone on the planet blacks out. The result is epic and messy, yet intelligent.
FlashForward doesn't waste time with characters in denial. People scramble for answers: Each person flashed to his or her own future. Why? Can it be changed?
David Goyer is known for writing big movies (Batman Begins, Blade, Jumper). He co-wrote a good script, but the surprise is the superb job he did as a director. Seeming a lot like Lost (in a good way), this is the season's best new show.
GREY'S ANATOMY SEASON-OPENER, 8-10 P.M., ABC
This hour starts where last season ended, with Izzie and George teetering near death. From there, it has deeply varied moments of grief from survivor's guilt to a case of the giggles.
There are some false moments here. The Chief's behavior is out-of-character; doctors are indecisive about whether to donate a friend's organs something few medical people would hesitate about.
Even the latter flaw, however, leads to a strong moment. We're reminded that Grey's Anatomy is written and acted with depth, humor and passion.
