One sexual predator was sentenced to 15 years in prison yesterday for assaulting two underage girls, and another received 50 years behind bars for kidnapping, beating and raping two prostitutes.

Circuit Judge Virginia Crandall sentenced Jon Joseph Rutherford, 22, to 15 years for raping a 15-year-old female in 2006 and later sexually assaulting a 13-year-old female.

Judge Steven Alm sentenced the other defendant, John Veikoso, also 22, to a total of 50 years for two violent attacks on prostitutes he picked up in Downtown Honolulu early this year.

Both men wept and asked for mercy.

"You should never date younger girls because they're just not ready," Rutherford said.

Veikoso said he was "really sorry" and claimed that he "wasn't clear-minded" when he attacked his victims.

But Alm called Veikoso "a serial rapist" who "brutalized" his victims.

"I normally am a huge believer in second chances," Alm told Veikoso. "But it's a little late for that."

Veikoso had pleaded guilty to a firearms offense and was awaiting sentencing when he attacked his first victim in January after picking her up on Kukui Street.

The second victim was kidnapped, beaten and raped in February. Both women testified against Veikoso at trial and again yesterday when he was sentenced.

"I'm not your victim anymore. I survived," the first victim told Veikoso.

"I think you should go to jail for the rest of your life," she said.

The second victim echoed that sentiment.

"I hope you get life in jail so that you can never hurt anyone again," she said.

Alm praised the women for having the courage to report what happened to them and to testify in court against Veikoso.

Veikoso believed they wouldn't report the attacks because they were prostitutes, "but he picked on the wrong victims in this case," Alm said.

The prosecutor in Rutherford's case, Thalia Murphy, said the defendant had sex with a 13-year-old victim while he was on probation for raping a 15-year-old girl.

He had given a false name to his second victim, but her mother found out who he was and learned of his earlier crime after checking with a friend who worked in criminal justice, Murphy said.

When Rutherford found out his identity had been discovered, he fled to Montana, where he was recaptured by a U.S. Marshals Service task force, the prosecutor said.

"Both victims have suffered a great deal because of the defendant's preying on them," Murphy said.

"He can make excuses and say 'I'm sorry,' but that's of little consolation for the lifelong effects his crimes are going to have on them," she said.
