Kamehameha Schools alum Kanekoa Texeira has made the 25-man roster as a relief pitcher for the Seattle Mariners, the Maui News reported.

Texeira is 1-0 with a 0.64 earned run average in 14 innings this spring. He has allowed nine hits, one earned run, four walks and has eight strikeouts.

The 24-year-old right-handed pitcher was born in Kula, Maui. He joins Shane Victorino and Kurt Suzuki as Maui-born players on major league rosters.

Meanwhile, the Kansas Royals optioned pitcher Blake Wood and first baseman Kila Ka'aihue to Triple-A Omaha yesterday.

Wood, a top prospect who was converted to a reliever last season, pitched in seven Cactus League games and posted a 4.70 ERA.

Ka'aihue, an 'Iolani alum, had a productive camp, batting .347 (17-for-49) with a club-high four home runs and 11 RBIs. However, he had first baseman Billy Butler and designated hitter Jose Guillen ahead of him.

Last season, Ka'aihue hit .252 with 17 homers and 57 RBIs in 131 games with Omaha.

Astros: Houston first baseman Lance Berkman has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a nagging left knee injury. Berkman had arthroscopic surgery on March 13 after the knee swelled in the first days of spring training.

Mets: New York first baseman Daniel Murphy will be out two to six weeks after spraining his right knee in a rundown. An MRI yesterday showed Murphy has a low-level sprain of his MCL, which he suffered in Tuesday's game against St. Louis.

Phillies: Philadelphia closer Brad Lidge received a cortisone shot in his surgically repaired right elbow. The reliever had surgery in November and likely won't be ready to pitch until later this month at the earliest.

Rangers: Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler is expecting to open the season on the disabled list because of a high ankle sprain. Kinsler says there is no timetable for his return.

Marlins-Tigers: The Florida Marlins acquired left-hander Nate Robertson from the Detroit Tigers for left-hander Jay Voss. The trade enables Robertson to start with the Marlins and assures left-hander Dontrelle Willis a spot in Detroit's rotation.
