PIECE OF CAKE

Cali indie rockers Cake will be performing for the first time in the Islands tonight and tomorrow with 17 years' worth of music — more than enough to turn out a couple of decent sets.

Known for their catchy pop-, soul-, funk-, rockabilly- and country-inspired tunes and their wise-cracking lyrics (and their No. 1 hit "Never There,") the men of Cake have managed to keep making music over the long haul without compromising their decidedly non-mainstream sensibilities. The band has released five studio albums, with a sixth scheduled for release this year.

BORN FOR BRASS

HAWAI'I WEEKEND ON FOOD NETWORK

The Food Network goes local this weekend with a Hawai'i edition of Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives," and local ace of cakes Rick Reichart of Kailua cake shop Cakelava competing in the network's "SpongeBob Birthday Cakes" challenge (see page 9 for details).
