Hawai'i surfers Coco Ho and Melanie Bartels advanced to the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Women's Pro surfing contest yesterday at Australia.

The third round was completed in 1- to 2-foot waves at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.

Ho defeated France's Lee Ann Curren with a last-second wave. Needing a score of 3.93 to win the heat, Ho received a score of 4.47 on her final wave.

"It was definitely nerve-racking," Ho said. "It's really hard conditions and I made a few mistakes early on, just catching too many waves. I think it was my April Fool's joke — Mother Nature trying to get one back on me. But I got really lucky."

Bartels defeated Australian Jessi Miley-Dyer, 12.17-9.67.

Carissa Moore of Honolulu was eliminated in the third round. Sally Fitzgibbons of Australia defeated Moore, 9.83-8.80.

The contest is the second stop on the 2010 ASP Women's World Tour.

VERCRUYSSEN WINS

Roosevelt High senior Nani Vercruyssen won a gold and bronze last weekend at the 2010 Trampoline and Tumbling Pan American Championships at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Vercruyssen, 18, won the women's individual trampoline continental title in the senior division and teamed with Hayley Butcher of St. John, Ind., to place third in the women's synchronized trampoline.

Vercruyssen scored 36.900 points to beat out Canada's Samantha Smith (35.700) and Brazil's Joana Di Carlo Conde Perez (33.800) for the gold medal.

More than 260 gymnasts from six North and South American countries competed for continental titles in the senior, junior and age group categories.

HAMM CAMP OPEN

The Blitz Soccer Club opened up 50 spots for the Mia Hamm Soccer Camp, which will be held next week at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

The camp will run April 6 to 8 and also will feature current and former University of Hawai'i soccer players. It is open to boys and girls, 7-under to 19-under, and costs $150.

Camp times run from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for players 7-younger to 11-younger and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for players 12-younger to 19-younger.

BLUE BEATS WHITE

Mililani defender Chelsea Miyake and Baldwin forward Ayesha Pladera scored goals as the Blue team beat the White team, 2-0, last Saturday in the annual Hawai'i Youth Soccer Association Senior All-Star game at Kamehameha.

The boys game ended in a 1-1 tie, with Island School forward Michael Chamberlain and Kalāheo forward/midfielder Joshua Amoroso scoring goals.

The games showcased some of the top Hawai'i senior soccer players with HYSA and Olympic Development Program qualifications.
