University of Hawai'i two-sport star Amber Kaufman was one of 20 UH athletes to be named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic team for winter sports.

The sports were men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field, women's swimming and diving, and gymnastics. UH does not have gymnastics or men's track.

Kaufman, a volleyball standout, took second in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Fayetteville, Ark., March 12.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games.

SURFING

Ho, Bartels tie for fifth in Australia

Hawai'i surfers Coco Ho and Melanie Bartels tied for fifth place at the Rip Curl Women's Pro surfing contest yesterday at Australia.

The final day of the three-day contest was run in 1- to 3-foot waves at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.

Ho and Bartels were both eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Australia's Sally Fitzgibbons defeated Ho in a quarterfinal heat, then Peru's Sofia Mulanovich defeated Bartels.

Defending world champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia defeated Mulanovich in the final.

The contest was the second stop on the 2010 ASP Women's World Tour. Gilmore has won both contests so far this year.

Bartels is currently ranked No. 3 overall, and Ho is No. 5.

The men's Rip Curl Pro did not run any heats yesterday. Hawai'i surfers in the men's field are Andy Irons, Kekoa Bacalso, Fred Patacchia Jr., Dusty Payne and Roy Powers.

BOXING

Amateur card set for today at Palolo

An amateur boxing card featuring between 20 to 25 bouts will be held today at the Palolo District Park gym starting at 5:30 p.m.

Admission is $12.

The event is organized by Amateur Boxing of Hawai'i and the Kawano and Palolo boxing clubs, and sponsored by Waipahu Pawn Shop and Leland Chapman of "Dog The Bounty Hunter."

Manoa league seeks Class C teams

The Manoa Adult Basketball League is looking for teams to compete in its Class C league.

The season will start April 18 and games will be played Sunday afternoon at Manoa District Park. There will be 10 games for each team. The cost is $575 per team.
