Bowling: Weber moves into third on career wins list

Associated Press

BALTIMORE, Md. — Pete Weber defeated Mike Scroggins on Sunday to win the Lumber Liquidators Marathon Open, allowing the Hall of Fame bowler to move into third place on the PBA Tour's career win list.

Weber, of St. Ann, Mo., has 35 victories to break a tie with Mark Roth, and his 268-224 win also denied Scroggins the PBA Tour player of the year award. Instead, Weber's longtime rival Walter Ray Williams Jr. won the honor for the seventh time.

Williams has won 47 titles, while the late Earl Anthony won 43 times.

Weber led the title match against Scroggins, of Amarillo, Texas, from the start, with five straight strikes before converting a single-pin spare. He then added another four strikes, denying Scroggins the title and the player of the year award.
