Amanda Tauali'i, dropped from the cleanup spot to No. 8 in the batting order, batted 5 for 5 and drove in four runs as Hawai'i routed New Mexico State, 14-3, last night to complete a sweep of a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Las Cruces, N.M.

Tauali'i had a three-run homer, two doubles and a pair of singles, and Katie Grimes hit a solo homer and a two-run shot for the Rainbow Wahine (27-11, 5-0).

Jenna Rodriguez, Traci Yoshikawa and Jessica Iwata each added three hits in support of Kaia Parnaby (14-5), who struck out 11 and walked one in pitching a complete game.

Rodriguez had three RBIs and Yoshikawa hit a solo homer.

Hoku Nohara, a Kamehameha Schools alum, hit a solo homer for the Aggies (17-15, 0-5).

In the first game, Grimes, Rodriguez and Kelly Majam hit two-run homers, and Iwata added a solo shot as UH held on for a 9-8 victory.

Grimes also had an RBI single, and Iwata and Melissa Gonzalez also had two hits. Stephanie Ricketts (12-6) allowed nine hits and six walks, but pitched a complete game to earn the victory.

Nohara hit a three-run homer for the Aggies.

HILO SWEEPS CU

Amber Waracka pitched a three-hitter as host Hawai'i-Hilo beat Chaminade, 8-0, yesterday in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader.

Amanda Tellez had two hits and two RBIs for the Vulcans (29-12, 19-7).

In the second game, Sarah Weisskopf pitched a five-hitter and Bryanna Hardy had three hits, including a two-run homer and RBI double, to lead Hilo to a 5-2 victory.

Shalin Yamaguchi had an RBI single for the Silverswords (14-28, 10-16).

SURFING

IRONS LEADS ADVANCE

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons, Dusty Payne, Fred Patacchia Jr. and Roy Powers won their respective first-round heats in the Rip Curl Pro men's surfing contest yesterday.

The first round was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.

Irons was one of the standouts of the round, receiving a two-wave score of 14.33 (out of 20). He is making a return to the ASP World Tour this year after taking a sabbatical in 2009.

"The ASP gave me the opportunity to take last year off and I took it," Irons said. "It's an amazing job, but surfers do get burnt out and it did happen to me. I really got to have a little time off, watch the contests from home and I realized how much I missed it ... now I'm way more motivated for this contest."

As first-round winners, Irons, Payne, Patacchia and Powers advanced directly to the third round.

Kekoa Bacalso, another Hawai'i surfer, lost his first-round heat and will have to compete in the second round, where eliminations begin.
