Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball first-round champion Saint Louis wasted no time in starting its quest to win the second round, routing 'Iolani, 10-2, yesterday at Ala Wai Field.

The Crusaders improved to 9-1 overall by winning their second-round opener. The Raiders fell to 5-5, 0-2.

By winning the first round, Saint Louis clinched a state tournament berth and at least a playoff for the ILH's overall title. But the Crusaders can also secure the overall crown by winning the second round.

"We're still going out to win every game," said Saint Louis senior second baseman Jordan Fukumoto, who went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a stolen base yesterday, and was in on three double plays defensively.

The first twin killing — in the top of the first inning — helped Crusaders starter Noa Siegfried escape a base-loaded, one-out jam immediately after 'Iolani took a 1-0 lead on Tiras Koon's bases-loaded walk.

Fukumoto caught a line drive by Tanner Nishioka, then threw to shortstop Kini Enos at second base for the double play.

"Getting out of that first inning was huge," Saint Louis coach George Gusman said. "That was big for us, because Noa struggled a bit early on."

The Crusaders scored four runs in the second, including a rare two-RBI sacrifice fly to deep center field by Dallas Correa as Ka'ai Tom raced home from second base.

Saint Louis got five more in the fourth off six hits to make it 9-1.

Siegfried allowed only one hit through three innings, and Chris Chung earned the victory by pitching the final four innings.

"They can hit, run, pitch and play defense, they're well-coached and disciplined. They're the team to beat," 'Iolani coach Jason Arakaki said of the Crusaders.
