Hawaiian Telcom had restored service by midmorning Wednesday to about 800 of 1,100 customers in Waipahu whose telephones went dead Sunday after two large-diameter telephone cables were deliberately severed in multiple locations along Waipahu Depot Road.
Company spokesperson Ann Nishida said Hawaiian Telcom repair crews have been working around the clock to restore service since the incident was reported.
"Approximately 3,600 wires in the cables were cut," Nishida said. "Each of those wires has to be identified, repaired and tested. It's a very complex repair procedure."
