Parts of the state can expect the soggy weather to stick around through the weekend, with some areas subject to thunderstorms and downpours, according to the National Weather Service.

A statewide flash-flood watch was in effect through this morning, because of the possibility of locally heavy thunderstorms.

The seemingly sudden drenching Wednesday night that lasted into yesterday dropped almost 9 inches of rain at the Wilson Tunnel and 3 inches on Mililani.

Weather service meteorologist Matthew Foster said the intensity of the rain could be explained by light southeasterly winds that caused the unstable storm system to stall over the Ko'olau Mountains.

"When we get a southeast flow like that it tends to anchor over the mountains and it stayed there," Foster said. "It wasn't really occurring anywhere else and it stayed a lot longer than anticipated, dropping more rain than originally thought."

The weekend forecast calls for numerous showers in windward and mauka areas, with isolated leeward showers.
