The Million Trees of Aloha and Caring for Our Beaches Project kicks off today at 10 a.m. at the Honolulu Zoo, near the keiki zoo.
The goal of the project, supported by the Hawaii state Legislature Keiki Caucus and the Children and Youth Month is to plant one million trees here by October. Every resident, school, church, business, community organization is urged to plant a non-invasive tree, preferably a native plant or food bearing tree throughout the state.
Today's kick off will include a tree planting and dedication, tree give-aways, free compost and educational displays an activities for the children.
Kiwanis, a global group of volunteers, will launch its initiative, Caring for Our Beaches Project with a cleanup at Oneula Beach. About 100 volunteers were expected to scour the sand for trash and debris.
The legislature's Keiki Caucus has made tree planting one of it's top priorities, according to the group.
