HPU cheer squad is best

Hawai'i Pacific University's large co-ed cheer team won its eighth consecutive title at the National Cheerleaders Association and National Dance Alliance Championships yesterday at Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Sea Warriors' dance team won its fifth consecutive title, and also won the Hip Hop category.

The HPU all-girl cheer team and small co-ed cheer team placed third.

The HPU partner and group stunt teams and Sharkey the Sea Warrior will compete today.

GOLF

FUJIKAWA WAY BACK

Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa shot a 76 yesterday and is 15 strokes off the lead after the third round of the eGolf Professional Tour's inaugural championship at Southport, N.C.

Fujikawa, a Moanalua High alum, is tied for 66th with a 9-over 225 total.

Jeremy Pope of Pawleys Island, S.C., and Richard Scott, of St. Simons Island, Ga., lead at 6-under 210.

SURFING

SLATER WINS RIP CURL

Kelly Slater moved into position for yet another world surfing title by winning the Rip Curl Pro men's contest yesterday at Australia.

The final day of the contest was run in 3- to 4-foot waves at Johanna Beach, Victoria, Australia.

Slater won the contest despite surfing with a hairline fracture in his right foot. He injured his foot while practicing for the contest earlier in the week.

Slater, who is from Florida, defeated Australia's Mick Fanning in the final, 17.03-12.0.

Taj Burrow of Australia is currently ranked No. 1 on the 2010 ASP World Tour. Slater, who already owns a record nine world championships, is ranked No. 2.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore is Hawai'i's top-ranked surfer at No. 10 overall.

The next event on the tour is the Santa Catarina Pro at Brazil later this month.

TENNIS

HPU TEAMS RANKED

The Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis team is No. 1 in the first NCAA II West Regional rankings, while the Sea Warriors women are ranked No. 2.

In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, the HPU men are No. 6 and the women are No. 11.

On the men's side, Nikola Petrov is ranked No. 2 in the West and Aleksandar Markov is No. 7. Petrov and Dominic Mclusky are ranked No. 1 in doubles in the West.

On the women's side, HPU's Zora Vlckova is ranked No. 3 in the West and ninth nationally in singles. Vlckova and Ingrid Cseh are No. 3 in doubles in the West and No. 12 nationally.

BASEBALL

SEA WARRIORS SWEEP

Blake Amaral singled home Kenny Turner with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as Hawai'i Pacific beat Dixie State, 6-5, to complete a sweep of Dixie State in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

In the first game, Alex Agortsas batted 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Amaral also had three hits as HPU held off Dixie State, 5-4. Dixie State scored three runs in the top of the seventh.

HPU is 25-8 and 17-3; Dixie State is 24-12 and 15-9.
