Malama o Manoa will host its fourth "1,000 Trees Giveaway," 8 a.m.-noon Sunday at Manoa District Park pavilion, off Lowrey Avenue.

There will be free fruit, shade and endemic trees available. Also, arborists will be available to answer questions and give advice on the care and planting of trees, and Boy Scouts from Troop One will assist with loading trees into cars.

A featured tree this year is the peanut butter tree, which produces fruits that taste like peanut butter. There will be fruit trees, including mountain apple, banana, papaya, avocado, pomelo (jabong), coconut and coffee. Other trees and plants include kukui, monkey pod, variegated hau, plumeria, sea grape, red and green ti leaf, money tree, red croton, dwarf hau, Hawaiian white hibiscus, monstera, valentine vine, silver oak, snow bush, and more.

The event was created to raise awareness of the environmental and aesthetic benefits of trees. Malama o Manoa is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the special qualities of historic Manoa Valley, promoting community, and celebrating Manoa's cultural diversity and heritage.
