Firefighters douse 5-acre brush fire, no one is injured
About five acres of former sugar cane land across from the old Kekaha sugar mill were scorched during a brush fire yesterday, the Kauai Fire Department said.
There were no injuries and no structures were threatened.
Fifteen firefighters from the Waimea, Kalāheo, Kōloa, Līhu'e and Kapa'a stations responded to the 10:30 a.m. alarm. The department helicopter made water drops for about two hours.
A county crew from the Kekaha Landfill and workers from Gay and Robinson cut fire breaks using bulldozers, and county personnel also provided water tankers for firefighters to refill their tanks.
The fire was under control about 1 p.m. and fully extinguished at 3:40 p.m.
