Morning showers will give way to strong winds today, the National Weather Service says.

"A front moving rapidly down the island chain ... will bring a brief period of increased clouds and light showers," the weather service says in its area forecast synopsis. "Behind the front, northerly winds will become strong and gusty. ..."

Highs today will be 75 to 80 degrees and north winds will be 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph.

The weather service's red-flag warning — meaning conditions are favorable for rapid wildfire growth — got canceled a little after 4 p.m. today. Residents in leeward areas of the state were originally urged to be especially vigilant until 6 p.m.

A high-surf advisory is in effect for east-facing shores until 6 a.m. Sunday.

The weather service said a new northwest swell that will build overnight will bring surf of 7 feet to 10 feet to east-facing shores.
